Essential Aspects To Get Your Service Rates Right

By Andrew Parker

Marketing an online business that offers a service has parallels with product businesses, but you'll find important differences. A lot of online services will look at what is needed and then formulate a quote for the job. But the curious aspect many people encounter is there can sometimes be lingering thoughts after the quote is given. We humans often ask reflective questions wondering if things could have been different. If your quote is approved, then could you have gotten more from that prospect? Could you have gotten more and would it have been worth it? Very often unexpected tasks occur which almost always produce more work; sometimes it seems to be unavoidable. We want to look at this unique aspect involving pricing for the service based businesses.

All right, this unique model is all about performing some kind of service for your customers. But there is a critical distinction going on that we want to point out. The thing to always keep uppermost in mind are the range of benefits that your service directly makes available to your clients. Those are two totally different things, and the latter is much more powerful for your marketing. Your clients, or potential clients, feel about benefits in much more valuable terms and feelings than anything else, usually. The word, service, has nothing special when you hear it - that is an important thing to keep in mind. Plus there is nothing at all special about receiving "service." So what you should do is utilize the power of market positiioning; you do not provide a service - you offer people benefits.

Do you really know what you are worth? How well do you realize or are aware about what is out there, what you offer, and other aspects such as quality and experience? This area is one where countless people can have a hard time, and very often people undervalue their worth. Of course you should be as objective as you can in this area. If you are relatively inexperienced, then you should charge appropriately. If you are not really sure, then we suggest you perform some decent research. All you need to do is find others who supply the same kind of service you will, and check out what they charge or offer for their services. By doing that you can at least have some kind of point from which to start your own evaluation.

We will inform you upfront and in no uncertain terms that you should not ever negotiate over your service fees. Trust us on this one - people will attempt all they can to get you to drop your fees as far as you are inclined to do it. If you've got your fees clearly displayed on your site, they will still do it as if they totally dismissed it.

Dropping your fees simply reflects poorly on you; as if you have low esteem and self worth, etc. The moment you do that, then it is all downhill from that point on - and that is the truth; people will proceed to try and take advantage of you.
