The Best Way to Blow Out Transitioning or Natural Hair

By Olivia X. Pierce

As with using a flat iron, blowing out transitioning or fully natural hair is something you may choose to take on sometimes to achieve a specific look or to switch up your look.

Generally, its best to avoid heat products on your hair as much as possible. However, if you utilize the correct technique and products, you will be okay with occasional blow drying without causing too much damage.

On occasion it works well to blow dry your hair before you do a twist or braid out style. With this technique you get a sleeker and sometimes longer lasting style. Doing a blow out before doing these styles also helps your hair to dry quicker.

You just need to alter the kinds of products you put in your hair to make sure that you don't add back too much water and cause all of your blow drying work to be for nothing.

Finding the Best Blow Dryer: For natural or transitioning hair it is important that you blow dry with a blow dryer that uses a comb attachment. Using an attachment comb allows you to work with thicker hair more easily than if you did not have one. It helps so that you do not need to use the blow dryer in one hand and a comb in the other hand. Knowing this, you can eliminate any blow dryer that does not come with or accommodate a comb attachment when you are making your selection in purchasing.

After you exclude any dryers that don't come with an attachment comb there are few options left. Some good basic brands are Yellow Bird, Con Air, Tourmaline Tools and Hot Tools. Get a ceramic ionic one.

Which Products to Use: During the blow drying process, you should only use heat protectant. This is because if you use conditioner or moisturizer, it will take your hair longer to try. Conditioners and moisturizers add moisture to your hair, this will only be additional moisture that you are trying to get back out as you are blow drying. After your hair is dry, however, apply an oil based moisturizer, gloss or shine serum and hair oil.

The Method: For the fastest blow drying and to lessen breakage, its best to section your hair out into at least 12 sections and then dry from tip to root combing through each portion of hair until it is dry.

If you work from root to tip you will just pull your hair out because it causes too much tension on the hair. Also, save putting on any products, especially oils, until after you are done drying each section. If you put the oil on before the section is dry, it takes much longer to dry because the strands are already coated with the moisture "sealed in".

Transitioning hair care and natural hair styles do not have to be mysterious or challenging when you know what to do. Go to black hair forums, other hair care forums and research as many transitioning hair care tips as you find available. Search for terms such as black hair styles, hair transition, or transition relaxed to natural to find the best guidance.
