Thinking About Botox?

By Alina H. Winamaker

Botox, under prescription, can be used to smooth away the frown lines between the eyebrows, and other facial wrinkles, that men and women get in middle age. Smoothing out lines is what it is most often used for. This type of cosmetic improvement is used mostly by people who feel the lines on their forehead make them look tired or even angry.

If you have an allergy to any of the ingredients of Botox, you should not consider this treatment. And common sense dictates that you shouldn't go ahead if there is an infection in the skin surrounding the area being injected. Before a treatment, tell your physician if you have any issues such as asthma that affect your breathing.

How does it work?

The skin's wrinkles normally form right next to a muscle that is close to it, and normally beneath it.The Botox restricts nerve impulses from reaching the tissue that causes the wrinkle. The skin supported by the muscle stops being creased by constant expression contractions by this limited or no muscle movement. Lines and wrinkles stop forming when muscle contractions are inhibited. The person gets a more youthful look as a result, when frown lines and other wrinkles are reduced.

Botox injections is a non-invasive procedure that is often used for wrinkles, and it takes less than 30 minutes. The site to be treated receives an injection of a small amount of Botox. The nerve signals to the muscles under the skin are blocked by the Botox when it starts working. The muscle becomes relaxed and the skin smooths, which makes facial lines diminish.

The skin might be a bit red and sore after the Botox Injection Treatment, but this is normally minor and goes away after a few days. Usually on the same day, a patient can leave the clinic straight away and return to work. It may take up to a week to maximize the full effect, but the treatment usually starts to work within 3 days.

After the Treatment

Try to exercise your treated muscles for one to two hours following your procedure. You should practice squinting, frowning and raising your eyebrows. This will work the Botox into your muscles. If you forget or don't have the time to do it, it won't impact your results negatively, but it can help if you do do it.

Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas and, for 4 hours after the treatment, do not do yoga, heavy lifting or any type of strenuous exercise. Also, don't take Advil, vitamin D, or Tylenol after the procedure.

If, after the procedure, you see some tiny bumps or marks on your face, do not be concerned. Within a few hours they will go away.

If you decide to have a Botox treatment, make sure whoever is doing it is trained specifically in this procedure. These treatments must be viewed as the medical procedures they are.
