Understanding Microdermabrasion Crystals And Their Use

By Dawn Williams

There is a normal cycle to the skin. The skin is made up of cells that, like other cells in the body, die after a period of time. As these cells begin to die off and are shed, new skin cells are created to replace them. This is the process that keeps the skin looking youthful and rejuvenated. During the aging process, the reproduction of new skin cells becomes slower. When this process slows, the dead skin cells gather on the surface of the skin. Cosmetic procedures are available to help, and one such procedure uses microdermabrasion crystals.

The skin treatment is usually performed in a salon or cosmetic treatment facility. A technician uses a type of vacuum machine to remove anything sitting on the skin. This suction also helps to stimulate blood flow to the area and encourage draining of the lymph nodes. Through the increase in circulation, skin cells are able to multiply much faster because the blood flow has increased.

After the suctioning, a crystal material is blasted at the surface of the skin. Some facilities will use a different machine for this step, while others have machines that handle all steps in the procedure. The blasting of the special material removes any cells that were still present after suctioning. Baking soda and aluminum oxide are common substances that are used to make the crystal material.

The third step in the process is to suction the skin again. This second suctioning will get rid of all the remaining dead cells that were broken up by the crystal blasting, along with anything else that got removed from the surface. Oxygen exposure is increased because the pores are now open. Smooth and young looking skin is the end result.

One of the main reasons people choose this type of cosmetic procedure is because it does not involve surgery. The risks are much lower than with surgery or other procedures. Also, the recovery time is much shorter, if there is any recovery at all. Surgery is one other option for removing skin surface issues that are deeper in the skin layers, but it may not always be necessary.

One of the common reasons why people undergo a procedure using the crystal material is because there are visible wrinkles. Some people with light scarring from acne are also included. Difficult issues that occur further into the skin layers generally do not benefit from the procedure because it only removes impurities from the surface.

Potential side effects are typically the only drawbacks to the procedure. Dark or light colored spots may occur, referred to as skin spotting. It is also common for some other basic side effects to occur following the procedure. For example, many people have experienced mild redness, irritation, and peeling or flaking. These side effects generally subside within a few days as the skin begins to heal naturally and new cells are created.

For most people, multiple sessions with the microdermabrasion crystals will be necessary, particularly for more pronounced wrinkles and dullness. It is generally recommended for sessions to be spaced with a few weeks in between to allow for proper healing. People who have this procedure are advised to avoid direct sunlight and any make up or chemicals that may add to irritation for a few days following the procedure.
