Man was able to invent the knife the moment they thought of separating or cutting something. Over the thousands of years, knives have evolved from stone cutting tools to instruments made of specifically designed materials for all kinds of activities, to include outdoors, survival, and just plain everyday use.

There are those who love to keep a set or specific selection of knives at home. Kitchen knives are a common item used for variety of cutting purposes in the kitchen. Knives are also a must have for those who are engaging in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking and hunting. With the increased demand in knives, more and more companies are also increasing in number. There are also companies who make cheap knives because they know that they can sell them. Anyone who knows how to handle knives can tell which one is good and durable. Having said that, is there a way on how anyone can become good in creating knives?

For one to be able to have the title "master knife maker", he or she should be able to grasp the full details about knives. There are dozens to hundreds of knife classifications out there and you have to be familiar with each one of them in order to be an effective knife maker. This is for the reason that you will need to know the classification of knives in order for you to suggest the right knife for your client depending on his or her needs. Take for example the knife which a surgeon uses in his or her operation and the knife that is used outdoors, these two knives are entirely different and you should know as knife maker the difference between the two. All knives have their own specific function.

With all the knives in the world, each of these knives are designed for one special purpose. An effective knife maker should know how to design a knife for a specific purpose and should have a thorough knowledge with regard to metalwork. All of these skills are necessary if you want to be a master knife maker.

If someone has a need for throwing knife, it needs to be worked in a special way so it has perfect balance. If someone is looking for a rugged hunting knife, it has to be designed in such a way that it is durable and yet performs the function that is demanded of it.

Durability is usually what is sought for in a knife and therefore materials with this trait is often used. There are also those knives that require thinner materials for thin slicing and there are also those that should be thick for hard cutting.

Creating knives are also a form of an art thus making knife makers artists. A part of their job description is to be able to create a knife that can be used outdoors, in the kitchen, something to cut thin or large items and others.

Therefore, being a master knife maker will require you to have that special skills and a good understanding about knives as well as the design and function that your knife should possess.
