Putting on Weight and Adrenal Fatigue

By Louise Melton

So how is weight gain linked with adrenal fatigue? There is a subtle balance to be held between the hormone secretion of your adrenal glands and the closely related hormonal emission of the pituitary gland which is in the head. Other glands in the body also secrete hormones. The primary hormone pumped out by the adrenal glands is known as Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone. The more you stress, the more your adrenal glands pump cortisol into the blood stream. Cortisol prepares your body for survival by physically preparing you for a fight or flight scenario.

If you're consistently soliciting your adrenal glands, they may at some point struggle to meet the request. This is similar to when the pancreas can no longer cope with too much sugar in the blood and you become diabetic. When you're in adrenal fatigue you'll have multiple biochemical disparities which could effect all your organs and also effect adversely the way your body stores fat. Also , raised levels of cortisol will make your body store fat in the lower abdomen ( for men ) and on the tummy and thighs ( for females ). This is because as part of your body's "survival strategy" it stores fat thinking you are stressed because you are not finding food! So it kindly helps you not to starve by piling up fat efficiently.

Adrenal fatigue can go from mild to extremely serious. A lot of people find themselves somewhere in the middle of these two poles. The classical mild cases are those folks that typically outline themselves coffee addicts. They find they are not working properly without the utilization of synthesised stimulants such as caffeine, energy drinks or sugar. Of course only some of these folks are suffering from adrenal fatigue but a good number of them are starting to show the 1st symptoms. On the other end we have got the people that are just one stop away from serious depression. The tragedy is that even then they're frequently misdiagnosed and instead of helping the adrenal glands they are simply given anti-depressants which won't cure them but simply ease some symptoms. They will keep feeling tired, craving particular foodstuffs, piling on weight and even having moderate to heavy muscle ache.By taking anti-depressants they will not resolve their invalidating emotional and physical difficulties.

The supplements that treat adrenal insufficiency are often geared to normalizing the levels of the hormone called Cortisol present in the blood.

Cortisol has critical anti inflammatory properties and when the body is externally replaced with cortisol-like substances then the glands have an opportunity to rest and regenerate. Licorice mimics the effects of cortisol in the body and 25-100mg of the extract ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ) are a help in allergies, lengthy fatigue and inflaming pathologies. The extract should not be taken for more than 6-8 weeks at a time and is best taken in the morning and evening, a half hour before meals, in order to mimic the body's natural cortisol rhythm.

Magnesium is the best anti-stress mineral available. Overwork and stress make your body consume large amounts of magnesium and when your body has exhausted it's store you'll feel drained, grouchy and probably suffer with insomnia. Magnesium supplements are readily available over the counter and could be a great hand with reducing the leading health indicators of Adrenal Fatigue and Fibromyalgia.

However it is also considered to be a great treatment for boosting the immune mechanism and controlling blood sugar levels.
