SEO Before and After Panda - The Major Changes

Not every change of Google's search algorithm requires changes in SEO processes done by marketers; however, when it comes to the Panda Update launched in 2011, things are quite different. Not long after the update, many websites were affected because of their low-quality content (not informative enough, spam content), but also some innocent websites were affected just because they didn't fit very well in the criteria of a high quality content website. The SEO experts and marketers which were administering these websites found themselves in the position of having to change their techniques in order to stop those websites from getting penalized again by the Panda Update.

Still the question remains: what did really change after the implementation of the Panda technology into the ranking algorithm? First, let's have a look at the websites that were penalized by the update. The main targets of the update were content farms. A content farm is defined by a website which accepts user submitted content from any niche, providing the right for the submitter to include two or more links targeting his own website, in the article. Because most of the time the content submitted was written just to fulfill the required number of words, its quality was very low, providing almost no information to the reader. That is why Panda lowered those websites' rankings in SERP (Search Engine Results Page).

Next up on the list are the websites promoting spam advertisements. These are those websites whom are low on content, built only to get filled with ads from different sources. You can tell if a website was affected by the Panda Update because of its spam-like appearance if it hasn't got a decent content/ads ratio. Otherwise said, if the website has more ads on page than informative content, or if the ads are pop-up or pop-under type, the site is surely going down into rankings.

So, in the meantime, you probably understood what some marketers needed to change in their techniques to provide safety from the Panda Update. Make sure to avoid content farms as they won't help you in reinforcing your backlink structure; it is better to try obtaining a link from a well ranking websites in your niche, by providing it with a high quality article to be posted. Also, keep an eye out on the level of advertisements present on your website, and also on their type; remove pop-in and pop-under advertisements, and always make sure that the content/ads ratio is correctly established. Finally, remember to post quality-content, so the users reading can get informed and not time wasted.
