How S E O Gears Overcomes New Google Algorithms

By Rosetta Drake

A few years ago, retaining rank through content marketing was a simple task. One only needed to use smart keyword placement in articles to build links. Google's new updates and the launch of stricter search engines has had a drastic impact on techniques used to market online. Updated algorithms are harder on shallow content and repetitive wording. S E O Gears and similar marketing organizations have needed to update their methods to generate traffic.

The entire SEO community was flipped upside down by Google's Penguin and Panda updates. These new algorithms were launched during 2012, leaving companies with thousands of content marketing articles removed from websites across the internet. Several content marketing sites changed their strategy and cut down on staff to better serve the new demands for higher quality content.

The dark side of SEO has resulted in search results flooded with spam. Panda's launch led to the removal of many of these articles. Some were penalized through rank. Panda's goal is to fill search results with high value content.

The first Panda update came into effect in February 2011. Certain low end sites lost their traffic as a result. The most recent panda update was launched in January 2013, and Google simultaneously released information about new methods of ranking. 12% of content marketing sites were impacted by the dramatic changes.

Google algorithms have always been a factor to pay attention to in content marketing but they usually go unnoticed because the changes are subtle. Panda's update was far more potent, so SEO practitioners could not ignore it. Market share was lost by a number of online businesses and many content farms became obsolete. Google claimed that the update wasn't aimed at content farms but they were inevitably the hardest hit by panda.

The second update was called scraper, and it targeted rewritten content that was published repetitively as spun articles. Such methods were used to extend keywords and links into more sites, but the new release reduced the efficiency of the technique. Keeping up with updates may appear to be a difficult task, but those who continuously release deep and unique content will be able to retain their traffic.

Content farms generate traffic by determining the most popular searches done through major engines. Articles are then written with keyword placements based on popularity. Article writers are usually paid poorly, and little effort is put into content generation. Blekko, a new search engine, has been developed which omits all content farms from results.

Link building needs to be produced with skill, and SEO will continue to be a major way of achieving it. However, there are two different ways to build links. Organic techniques generate traffic by posting content that is interesting, so that readers visit the site more frequently and suggest it to their friends. Inorganic link building may produce excellent results in the short term but in the end, organically generated traffic is likely to retain rank for far longer.

Content marketing professionals like S E O Gears have had to focus on marketing best practices. Defined demographics are targeted, and content is published on sites they prefer. Well designed, easy to use sites support SEO campaigns.
