Planning To Open A Cosmetology School In California? Better Checkout These Requirements

By Cassandra Blissworth

Whether you are an aspiring cosmetology student or a business owner who wants to open a new cosmetology school in California areas (e.g. San Jose), getting familiar with the prevailing laws about obtaining a license to operate is beneficial to you. An aspiring student who knows the requirements will help himself to find the best cosmetology in the area. Also, for business owners, such knowledge can help him avoid potential legal issues that may arise .

So, what are the requirements that need to be complied with when you plan to open a cosmetology school? Here are the specifics as provided by the state's Board of Barbering and Cosmetology:

Get a provisional approval from BPPE - The Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education is the one who gives provisional approval, which is the first step in obtaining a license to operate a school, after examining your application.

Complete requirements for the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology - with this, you will need to provide/comply a number of requirements including: an application for Cosmetology School Approval; provisional approval (which is obtained from BPPE); floor plan demonstrating room for equipment and floor space necessary for at least 25 students; comply the minimum equipment requirements for a school of Cosmetology as specified in California Code of Regulation section 940; a list of 25 full time students; and a curriculum for the full cosmetology course.

On-site inspection to be conducted by a Board inspector - after complying the requirements above, the next thing is to let a Board of inspector conduct an on-site inspection of your facility. When approved, the board will issue a school code (for your school). Reminder: school code must be obtained prior to starting a school operation.

So, you've just read the fundamental requirements that need to be complied when obtaining a license to run a cosmetology school in California. There are of course some specific requirements so see to it that you check them as well most especially if a school you intend to run is located in big cities like Los Angles, San Francisco, or San Jose.

  1. I have a board game that is fun for students to learn about working in the salon. (could be published as a computer or Dvd game) I would love to make available to students, prospective students, cosmetologists, schools and Instructors! Anyone interested with gaming production background?
