Should You Worry About An Unnatural Link Warning?

By Abu Dawood

Google has been enforcing its webmaster terms of service lately. This has caused some havoc in the world of SEOs who may have been playing games with the rules in the gold old days when Google was not that good at catching them.

The search giant is penalizing webmasters who have a lot of duplicate content on their websites, and websites which have an unnatural link profile. During the early stages of the Penguin and Panda updates, many webmasters found their sites vanished out of the search results with no explanation. Even honest webmasters found themselves struggling in the SERPs. The good news is that Google is trying to be more transparent about what is, and is not, considered a violation of their policies.

This can be a disaster and a nightmare for website owners who relied upon Google's searches for most of their traffic. It is also very difficult to get Google to forgive you once they have sent this type of warning. It means that they have gone beyond merely imposing some sort of algorithmic penalty, but have manually stepped in to slap your hand.

If the links are on sites that belong to another webmaster, it might take more work. Contact those webmasters, and save copies of your emails. You will need to show Google those mails if the webmasters do not respond, or if they refuse to remove your links.

Or, if you cannot arrange for them to be removed, simply making a list of the dodgy links and contacting Google to tell them that you want to disavow those links. Google understands that webmasters do not have control over which sites link to them, and they will work with you to clean up your link profile.

It is not easy. Many webmasters fail to ever get the notice removed, and they end up finding it is easier to just start over with a new website! So, I think you can understand how important this topic is to all website owners and operators.
