Understanding Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Have you ever heard of omega 3 fatty acids? Chances are you have, but you may be confused regarding what they are and why you should make sure they are in your diet. Essentially, omega 3 fatty acids are a beneficial kind of fat that is important for healthy and normal functioning of your body.

There are a couple of main types of omega 3's. There are the short chain kinds that are known as ALA, and there are also long-chain kinds that are called EPA's and DHA's. You would do well to take an omega 3 supplement, because researchers are finding out that lots of diseases start in the body as a result of inflammation.

Inflammation is the precursor to such conditions as autoimmune diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis), depression, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and even asthma. Omega 3 fatty acids help to protect you from these diseases by reducing inflammation in your body. Your brain also benefits from omega 3's and contains high concentrations of this fatty acid.

You see, you can reduce your risk of getting Alzheimer's disease by making sure that there are high levels of omega 3 DHA in your body! And having high levels can also help you to feel less sad and less depressed.

Amazingly, however, omega 3's relieve the symptoms of depression and actually enlarge the size of the brain. By now you are convinced that you need plenty of omega 3's. So where does it come from? Well, your body cannot make these crucial fats, so the only way to get them is to either consume them in your food or take a supplement that contains them. Both methods work. Here are some tips for you to try.

Foods to eat include catfish, shrimp and other shellfish. You can also get omega 3's in Brussels sprouts, kale and spinach. You may, however want to take capsules for convenience sake. Just be sure to get enough to raise your levels.
