Sunless tanning, which is also known as self tanning, is the use of chemicals on skin to produce results that are similar to that of a suntan. This practice has become more popular in the last few decades. It began in the 1960s when there was increased concern over the effects of sun exposure and tan beds. Health officials urged individuals to not use these methods, which were being linked to skin cancer and other health problems. There are now numerous sunless tanning products on the market that are considered safer alternatives.

These sunless tanning products are considered healthier for the body and still allow for the change in appearance that is desired. They are not considered as harmful as ultraviolet rays. These items come in various forms, including gels, lotions, sprays and creams. These are applied directly onto skin of the user.

DHA, Dihydroxyacetone, is an active ingredient used in many sunless tanning products. The chemical temporarily darkens the skin when it is applied. The change in color will not was off, but instead, fade over time. Most of the tans last for three to seven days, but it will depend on product usage and quality. Generally, such formulas do not have ingredients that protect against the sun, for instance: sunscreen. This is done because sunless tanning products are not designed for outdoor application or use.

Sunless tanning products may also have Carotenoid-based formulas. These types are considered highly effective, as beta-carotene is an element that is both permanent and natural. Carotenoids are present in many fruits and vegetables and are what give these foods their natural hue. Other chemicals that may be present in sunless tanning products: Tyrosine and Afamelanotide.

Another option for sunless tanning products is special pills. Many of these supplements also include beta-carotene, which is not believed to have any adverse effects on the body. Still, the excess intake of such pills can result in an unfavorable orange or yellow hue of the skin. Some pills have Canthaxanthin, which some believe is harmful because large doses can cause hives and skin to change in color to orange.

Bronzers are another type of sunless tanning products. It falls under the category of makeup but can give skin a glow and color that is desired. Bronzer is available as gels, lotions, powders, sprays, mousses and moisturizers. Ingredients in these items may also be applied to makeup. Bronzing offers a subtle darkening and a natural glow.

Generally speaking, sunless tanning products are considered more safe than high amounts of exposure to UV rays, which is common with standard tanning. When properly applied, they give skin a natural and even coloring. Some tips to keep in mind for application: always exfoliate the area before application, use a light hand during application to ensure even coverage, apply on the tops of hands as a final step, and allow liquid-based products to dry and settle.

Sunless tanning products are a great way to change the appearance of skin without risk of developing health problems, such as skin cancer, caused by increased sun exposure. These formulas used in sunless tanning products are available in many different forms, including sprays, pills, gels, and lotions. Results vary and typically last for a few days up to a week.
