The Benefits Of The Babywise Method

By Marci Glover

People choose to raise their babies and children the way they prefer. Some can be quite strict, and others not so much. Who is really to say what's right and what's wrong, as kids really do turn out a particular way resulting from their DNA, the way they're raised, and a lot of other factors. Below, find information on understanding the controversial babywise method that could be right for some, but not for others.

Feeding is very big issue with newborns. Some parents believe that it's important to feed whenever the baby demands it, where others believe that it should be more rigorous, feeding only on a schedule. With babywise, depending on the infant's age, it's recommended to feed on the schedule. The idea is to establish a routine that starts with feeding, and then play, followed by sleep, each and every time.

This becomes a repetitive routine that's never broken. It can be quite difficult for some parents to follow such a routine, as they hear their newborn infant cry as a result of hunger. However, it allows for the infant to fall into a routine that encourages sleep throughout the night from as early as eight weeks.

Establishing such a great routine means that the baby will end up feeling rested. It will discourage the association of feeding and sleeping, which only leads to more feedings throughout the night. Following a routine makes life more predictable, and as such provides both the parent and the child with security.

Another thing that is certain is that parents can feel exhausted having to wake up throughout the night to feed a hungry baby. A lack of sleep can bring on many problems with health, memory, and just overall well-being. It's difficult to function throughout the day, after months of being sleep deprived. While some parents may function better than others, it takes a toll as time goes on.

This is where this theory comes into play, as babies are taught easily and early on to discontinue feeding at night. Beyond that, there is sleeping, and this method recommends allowing the baby to cry for up to 20 minutes without consoling. This can be quite difficult for some parents, but eventually they learn to cry themselves to sleep.

The routine becomes established almost naturally. However, it's important to note that this method also suggests that a baby be fed sooner than the scheduled feeding time, if he shows he's really hungry. That means understanding one's own baby. Don't follow the instructions like one would if assembling a toy. Instead, make the necessary modifications.

This will ensure the baby is safe, comfortable, and happy. The last thing any parent would want is to harm their baby by withholding food that would lead to dehydration or other problems. Parents want their babies to thrive, so sometimes a little deviating is necessary. If this advice is to be taken, and this method is to be followed, ensure that the book is read and start to finish.
