How to Quit Drinking Liquor

Most people who abuse alcohol understand the reasons why they have to stop drinking, but the how continues to puzzle even this most diligent person amongst us. Its possible that you have lost lots of jobs and have legal problems. Its either you were dumped by your partner or abandoned by your family because of how you have been acting. Whatever your reason is, its time to take a good look at yourself and finally be convinced to stop drinking alcohol.



People who think they abuse alcohol are frequently right. However, admitting it is a lot easier than doing something about it. Denying it won't change the fact that there is a problem.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a Magic Pill that made you quit drinking? Or maybe a hypnotist to 'reprogram' your need for liquor. Wouldn't a time machine be nice, go back in time before you had a problem and refrain from that first drink?

But the fact remains that it is a long and hard procedure. First, you have to learn how to live your life without alcohol. Some people will crave for alcohol and this could be a long and painful phase. If you want to succeed then you could use some tools and strategies. Heavy drinkers need help through withdrawal and detox. So before quitting, ask for a physician's suggestion. The pain and discomfort others experience is minimal. Most alcoholics have gone through this a time or two on their own. But the physical cravings can last for years. You will not succeed if you don't learn to live a life without alcohol. For every one thousand alcoholics, only one stays sober for at least 2 years. The odds are dismal but there is a way to be that 1.

You will not succeed if you don't follow the methodical process to quit drinking liquor.

If you admit that you need to stop drinking alcohol then you are in the right direction.

Write down all the reasons that you feel you must quit drinking liquor. No excuses, just write down each and every reason. Include those embarrassing times and the individuals you have physically and emotionally hurt. Put this paper in a safe place so that you could read it if you need to expel any doubt that your must quit drinking liquor.

If you need more convincing then think of the money you could save if you stop going to clubs and buying alcohol. With the legal fees, you could bring home your whole income. Make sure you have the numbers right when you check your budget and credit card statements. Try to figure out how much alcohol is costing you not only physically, mentally, relationally but financially.

This kind of honest introspection is something you will have to get used to in order to come to terms with your life and recover fully. You will know when its the right time to quit.

Ask for Advice from a Doctor

The damage done to your body is something only a physician can evaluate. A physician could also evaluate how you should quit drinking. There are two choices - do it alone or be medically supervised in a hospital.

Telling People You Trust Could be Helpful

Another effective method to quit drinking is to tell trusted people who will understand that you're going to give up drinking and you might need their support. Most people are flattered and would be there to support and help you through the difficult period.

Find Meetings

12 Step Meetings is a great place to meet others who have gone through the same thing you are going through. Start by looking for 12 Step Meetings around your neighborhood. Various kinds of people with various kinds of problems go to different types of meetings. Try to go to as many meetings in your area or better yet, try to go to 90 meetings in ninety days. In these meetings, you will be given important information on stopping.

If you have reached this point then that is something to be very proud of. Now its time to start a new life...one that doesn't involve drinking alcohol.
